Ultrasound Technician Degree

Various degree programs

An ultrasound technician, known as an ultra sonographer or a sonographer can be certified with a two year degree program in ultrasound technician, or can also opt for a 4 years bachelor’s degree. For further education and getting a better job prospects one can also continue education to earn a Masters degree in a additional 3 years after one earns a Bachelors degree. However, if you want to pursue a Masters degree in ultrasound technology, you will find only one school in the U.S. that can help you earn the Masters degree.

Associates degree

This is a common degree that many students prefer as it takes only two years to complete the degree course and immediately you can start earning. There are many community colleges and vocational classes that offer an Associate degree in ultrasound technology. However, there are some prerequisites as well like, a high school diploma, which is a must in case who wants to opt for an associate’s degree. The ACT or the SAT marks are not required to enroll into an associate degree program.

The coursework contains in-depth study in medical terminology, physiology and even anatomy to give students the proper guidance for their future job.  Many diagnostic imaging courses are also held during the course. They are also expected to attend a practicum so that they are well versed with what they do later in their job.

Bachelor’s degree

The Bachelor’s degree in ultrasound technology is always better as compared to an associate degree course. As the degree allows students to specialize, they are always in demand in any medical health care facility and can also earn higher salaries. The course takes four years of study during which one can have a detailed knowledge as well as hands-on experience in ultrasound technology.

The bachelor’s degree training consists of abdominal sonography, vascular sonography, cardiovascular sonography and gynecological sonography.

The course work includes chemistry, Doppler sonography, advanced physics, cardiac sonography, applications of sonography, vascular sonography, sonography physics, and clinical practicum.

Registration with the ARDMS is required for those with a bachelor’s degree program. Although the certificate is not necessary by many of the states in the U.S., it is asked by most of the employers and will only employ those with a certified degree certificate. Therefore it is highly recommended that the students appear for the exam and earn the certificate so as to get a good job at various health care centers.
